June 6, 2004 Email Update

I spoke with Dr. Johnson Ojo this morning, who is overseeing the implementation of the new ordinance for the Department of Public Health. He is in the middle of writing up the guidelines for the various permits and completing the practitioner tests.

There will be two written tests: one for the General Practitioner (100-hours of training) and one for the Advanced Practitioner (200-hours of training). Both tests are written at a very basic level and should pose no problem for practitioners who have actually gone to massage school. There have been two meetings discussing the tests, and there may be one more the week of June 14th.

The Department of Public Health allocated $10,000 to purchase a new computer system for processing the identification system of practitioners as required by the ordinance. At this point, there is no intention of fingerprinting applicants and, with the new computer system, application for any of the permits can be achieved in one-stop process at DPH offices.

Dr. Johnson indicated that they were thinking about having a public informational meeting to answer questions about implementing the new ordinance. They also want to put the implementation process up on their website. If a meeting is scheduled, I will send around another notice.

Please continue to encourage your practitioner colleagues to sign up for this email list for further updates.
